Today the farm is known as Strandveld Vineyards, and hosts a premium range called Strandveld, as well as being the home of First Sighting wines. Learn more about the Strandveld Journey and our milestones along the way.

Bartholmeu Diaz had the first sighting of the southernmost tip of Africa

Many years later – prior to 2001

A group of friends (all enthusiastic wine lovers) inspired by the maps of the 15th Century mariners, decided they were going to embark on an adventure of their own – to make their own wine. Using ancient maps, from these explorers, they sought out a location to plant their vineyards based on their proximity to the sea.

July 2001

A somewhat rundown sheep and wheat farm of about 800ha, a few kilometres from the tip of Africa, was found.

July 2001 – 2005

The adventure of planting and nurturing the vineyards began.

We had achieved the following:

  • The farm has 67ha under vines,
  • A modern winery converted from an old potato shed on the farm
  • Produced our first three vintages of distinctive wines from different vineyard blocks on the farm:
    • First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc,
    • First Sighting Pinot Noir,
    • First Sighting Shiraz

We launched a premium range from specially selected vineyard blocks on our farm each expressing the best that Elim has to offer:

  • Strandveld Sauvignon Blanc (certified as a single vineyard wine)
  • Strandveld Syrah
  • Strandveld Adamastor.

We won our first 5 stars for the Strandveld Adamastor 2009 in the Platter Guide

The Strandveld “Anders Sparrman” was launched into the market, a benchmark Pinot Noir

We won our second 5 stars for the Strandveld Sauvignon Blanc 2010 in the Platter Guide

We added a new wine to each of our labels:

  • First Sighting Shiraz Rose
  • Strandveld “The Navigator”, a Rhone Styled blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier

We won the Gold Veritas Medal for First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2012 & the Gold Medal for Strandveld Sauvignon Blanc 2012 at the Concours Mondiale competition.

Highlights from 2014 include:

  • Conrad Vlok celebrates a decade of winemaking at Strandveld,
  • We won the Classic Wine Top 6 Award for First Sighting Rose 2013,
  • We released our very first Noble Late Harvest – Strandveld Suikerbekkie NLH 2012.
