Pinot Noir

Vintage Description

Few other grape varieties will express its choice for a specific terroir to bring forth its true potential as clearly as Pinot Noir.  The art is thus more to satisfy the need for the right choice of slope, soil type and climate, than the actual wine making.

After careful observation of the performance of our different clones on their respective  different soil types, we finally discovered a new treasure between our barrels. Seven barrels were specially selected which showed more depth and structure, full and rich with dark-coloured berry fruits.

The vineyard is on a South East slope on white quartzite gravel with a coalin clay under layer.  The small crop of 2.3 t/ha was hand harvested during mid-February 2010.   February was a cool, dry month in Elim, with an average temperature of 20.3◦C.  The wine was matured in 300 litre French oak barrels from Burgundian coopers for 11 months (40% first-fill).

Tasting Notes

  • Strawberry on the nose, with dark moist soil characters. Sour cherries in the glass lead to a lovely tannin structure.
  • Will age for the next 5 years in the bottle.
