September 2014: The Navigator 2012 just released

Harking back to the early explorers during the great age of discoveries, Strandveld The Navigator 2012 is a full-bodied, yet elegant wine with an adventurous spirit from Africa’s windswept southernmost vineyards. Just released, the 2012 vintage of this signature red blend is reminiscent of the classic wines of the Rhône valley, but set apart by its own unique sense of place that is Strandveld.

This intrepid red blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier is named after Prince Henry the Navigator, the 15th century Portuguese royal patron of explorers, whose life’s work paved the way for the early circumnavigation of the tip of Africa, opening trade routes to the East. A fitting tribute to Prince Henry, Strandveld The Navigator 2012 represents the culmination of a journey of discovery of the Elim appellation spanning over a decade for winemaker Conrad Vlok.

With the vineyards located a mere 8 km from the sea, The Navigator 2012 is a true expression of the Elim landscape in South Africa’s most southerly wine ward. The wine boasts ripe berry fruit aromas with integrated white pepper that develop into notes of Chinese five spice.

Maturation of 22 months in 100% French oak, mostly second and third fill lends an elegant mouthfeel that opens up with hints of red fruit meandering into polished spicy notes and a delightful lingering finish. The long, slow ripening so typical of the Strandveld vineyards ensures excellent ageing potential for The Navigator of five to 10 years.

Conrad, who is also an enthusiastic cook, has the perfect recipe to enjoy with The Navigator 2012: “Any venison is a good match, but I would definitely recommend Springbok back fillet. Mix coriander, black pepper, crushed chilli and cumin to make a lovely spice crust for the meat. Wet the meat with olive oil and soya sauce, coat the meat with the mixture and braai either whole on the coals or cut the meat in slices if braaing in the pan. Add salt to taste – I love serving this one with a mushroom sauce. And don’t forget to add sweet potato to your plate – it gives a delicious, almost Turkish delight like taste together with The Navigator.”

Selling at the cellar door, Strandveld The Navigator 2012 is also available to buy online and at fine wine shops and top end restaurants.
