Shiraz SAWelcome to our weeklong celebration of bold flavours and perfect pairings.

At Strandveld Vineyards, Syrah is one of our most expressive wines shaped by sea breezes, shale soils, and the southernmost vineyards on the continent. So instead of celebrating just National Shiraz Day (21 August), we’re stretching the celebration out over seven full days — from 21 to 28 August.

Each day, we’ll share a new recipe on the blog, crafted to bring out the very best in our Syrah. From flame-seared meats to rich stews, smoky vegetables and even a dessert or two — every dish will have you pouring another glass.

Day 1 Recipe: Mushroom & Thyme Risotto

Silky, earthy, and full of flavour — this dish brings finesse to comfort food. And when paired with a bold, structured red like Syrah, it becomes something truly special.

The dish:
A rich risotto made with Arborio rice, pan-seared mushrooms, fresh thyme, and garlic — stirred slowly and lovingly with vegetable stock until creamy. Finished with shaved Parmesan and a drizzle of truffle oil for that indulgent edge.

Day 1 The wine: Strandveld Syrah 2021

Elegant yet powerful, with aromas of dark berries, black pepper, and salty minerality. Its savoury core and layered complexity complement the earthiness of the mushrooms and the richness of the risotto. The subtle oak and fine tannins enhance the truffle and thyme beautifully.
